NASA Space Apps: Weather Risk Modeling with ProbCast

Participating in the NASA Space Apps Challenge demands rapid engineering decisions and coordinated team management. As the Technical Lead for Team Moon Walkers, my goal was to transform satellite-derived Earth telemetry datasets into actionable environmental alerts for event planners.

Data Pipelines & Telemetry

The platform, ProbCast, queries geographic coordinates using the NASA POWER API (Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources). We designed a processing pipeline in Python to digest historical meteorology datasets:

  • Telemetry Ingestion: Real-time querying fetches wind speed, surface humidity, precipitation levels, and solar radiation coordinates.
  • Statistical Modeling: We implemented simple probabilistic rainfall thresholds using scientific python models.
  • Streamlit Frontend: Rendered maps (using Folium) and interactive widgets enabled event organizers to immediately audit hazard exposure scores.

Technical Leadership Under Pressure

In a hackathon setting, prioritizing delivery speed over architectural over-engineering is key. By managing workflow tasks between our data parsing team and frontend designers, we deployed a completely operational dashboard to public cloud endpoints within 48 hours, highlighting the value of focused, agile technical leadership.
